Chief Justice David Maraga's bold move to skip President Uhuru Kenyatta's Jamhuri Day celebrations at Nyayo Stadium on December 12, 2019, has left many Kenyans in awe.
Maraga's decision was seen as a follow-up to his remarks on November 4, 2019, where he stated that he would choose which state functions to attend if he was not treated with dignity due to his office.
True to his word, Maraga did not show up at the celebrations, which marked 56 years since Kenya achieved self-rule from British colonialists.
The seat reserved for Maraga remained vacant at the front row, normally occupied by the President, his deputy, Speakers of the National Assembly and Senate, House Majority Leaders, and the Chief of Defence Forces.
His absence was met with congratulations and praise from netizens, who appreciated his daring move.
Some Kenyans even called on Maraga to extend his bold move to the fight against corruption, urging him to facilitate faster handling of corruption cases by the courts.
Deputy President William Ruto acknowledged Maraga's presence at the function, unaware that the Supreme Court boss had snubbed the fete.
