On June 6, 2019, Joy Kanali's life took a drastic turn when she was attacked and shot three times by robbers in Mlolongo, Machakos County. The incident left her with severe injuries, including a broken pelvic bone, a bruised uterus, and a damaged bladder.

According to medical records, Kanali suffered three bullet wounds in her thighs and genitals, with the third bullet tearing through her private parts, bladder, and spine. She was first rushed to a hospital in Kitengela, where her wounds were stitched, but she was later transferred to Kenyatta National Hospital for further treatment.

Despite her ordeal, Kanali's assailants have not been arrested, and she continues to live in fear of another attack. Her mother, Jane Wamboi, has expressed concern over the police's failure to apprehend the culprits, saying that it is putting her daughter's life in danger.

Wamboi, a founder and church minister at New House of Dominion, has also spoken out about the financial burden of her daughter's medication, which has left her bankrupt. She claims that politicians who promised to cater for Joy's medication after the shooting have abandoned her.

The incident has sparked concerns over the rise in robberies in Mlolongo, with a police officer attributing the increase to the transfer of police officers and the new officers' lack of familiarity with the area. However, the officer also claimed that Kanali did not cooperate in identifying the criminals who shot her.
