On December 13, 2019, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko was arrested in Voi, sparking a chain of events that would lead to assault charges against him.

According to authorities, Sonko assaulted Coast Regional Police Commander Rashid Yakub at the Ikanga airstrip on the outskirts of Voi town, as he was being arrested over graft charges.

Police in Taita-Taveta County have forwarded the file recommending assault charges against the governor to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Noordin Haji for action.

“We are waiting for direction from the DPP and we have our own file here for action,” County Police Commander Said Mohammed Kiprotich said.

Four witnesses, including Mr. Yakub and three other police officers, have been listed to testify against the governor, who confronted the police as he resisted to board a police helicopter.

As the case unfolds, Sonko could be brought to Voi to answer the new charges, with the possibility of being charged in court this week.
