Four months after the census exercise in Kwale County, a group of youth who participated in the exercise are still waiting for their payment from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS).
According to the participants, the bureau has been taking them round in circles without fulfilling their promises, leaving them frustrated and without the money they were expecting.
One of the participants, Eunice Njeri, who carried out the exercise with her husband, expressed her disappointment, saying, "We wanted that money to start up a business but now we have not received the cash. We want the president to intervene."
KNBS Director General Zachary Mwangi had previously attributed the delay to errors in the account details provided by the participants, but the officials claim that they have corrected the details as instructed.
"They asked us to correct the bank details that we entered and we did as they said, we went to the CSO where we explained our issue and were told to wait.We have waited for four months and yet no action has been taken," said Kishindo, one of the officials taking part in the protest.
The officials are now wondering why their colleagues in Mombasa have already been paid while they are still waiting for their dues.
