On Sunday, December 15, 2019, Kisumu County will host the 13th edition of the Safaricom Series Kisumu City Marathon, with Silas Ngetich and Maureen Chepkemboi looking to retain their titles.
Despite the reduced sponsorship, which was cut short by Sh1.5 million, the event will still feature 348 participants competing in the 10KM race, down from the usual 42KM.
Joseph Ochieng, the Nyanza North Athletics Kenya (AK) Chairman, assured that preparations are ready for the race, citing the identification of routes and seating arrangements for guests.
“Security is tight, with the Kisumu County Commissioner assuring us of his support,” Ochieng said.
Top three winners in both men and women categories will receive Sh100,000, Sh50,000, and Sh25,000 respectively, while athletes in the top 10 will receive awards.
The event will also feature new categories, including an 8KM junior men's race, a 5KM junior women's race, and a 2KM veterans' race, which will be open to athletes from Kisumu, Siaya, Homabay, and Miori counties.
The 10KM race will start and end at the Milimani Estate in Kisumu.
