On December 14, 2019, the National Super League (NSL) leaders Nairobi City Stars were set to renew their rivalry with Kibera Black Stars in the first leg of the Kawangware-Kibera derby at Camp Toyoyo Stadium in Jericho.

The match was part of a busy day in the NSL, with several other derbies and matches taking place across the city.

The stakes were high, with the winner of the match taking home Sh30,000 in the Jonathan Jackson Foundation Jamii Cup, while the losers would receive Sh10,000.

City Stars, who were leading the NSL table with 16 points, were looking to increase their points tally and get promoted back to the Kenyan Premier League.

On the other hand, Kibera Black Stars, who were 16th in the table, were looking to move further away from the relegation zone.

According to JFF Chief Executive Officer Musalia Mwenesi, the Jonathan Jackson Foundation Jamii Cup was introduced to attract fans to the match.

“The JJF Jamii Cup aimed at raising the competitiveness of both sides as a Nairobi City Stars and Kibera Black Stars is a derby in its own right,” said Mwenesi.

“Apart from the cash prize for the two teams, the best player on either side will receive a pair of football boots.”
