Kenyan boxer Rayton Okwiri is gearing up for a crucial title defence against Augustine Matata of the Democratic Republic of Congo on December 14, 2019, at Charter Hall in Nairobi.

Okwiri, a prison warder, has been training for the last 12 weeks under the guidance of former international Daniel Shitsia, David Kiilu, and Boniface Ndolo at Nairobi's Kaloleni Social Hall and Pumwani's Pal Pal Gymnasium.

According to Okwiri, they have devised a game plan to secure victory against Matata, who boasts a perfect record of seven professional wins.

Matata, who arrived in Kenya yesterday, underwent weighing in and medical check-ups last evening. The match is expected to be officiated by a team of experienced referees and judges from Zambia, Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania.

Okwiri, who has five wins and a draw from six fights, is confident of retaining the title and has called on his fans to turn up in large numbers for the fight.

Kenya Professional Boxing Commission secretary-general Franklin Imbenzi has expressed optimism that a win for Okwiri will enhance his chances of fighting for a world title.
