On December 13, 2019, St Peter Claver's Catholic Church in Nairobi's city centre sparked controversy by posting a sign at its entrance warning congregants to dress modestly.
The sign listed several items of clothing deemed 'inappropriate' for church, including dresses with slits, miniskirts, rugged jeans, and clothing that exposes arms.
According to the sign, congregants who break the rules risk unknown consequences, as the church administration declined to comment on the matter.
However, not everyone agrees with the church's stance. Rosalia Alexis, a supporter of the move, believes that people should dress appropriately for every occasion.
"What you wear to a dance hall or disco should not be the same as what you wear in church," she said.
On the other hand, Alex Muinde, 26, thinks that the church should not control what congregants wear, citing personal freedom.
