On December 12, 2019, Kisumu County Commissioner Susan Kariuki announced a ban on night discos in the county, citing their association with rising crime rates.

According to Kariuki, almost 80% of vehicular homicide and burglary cases in the county are linked to these discos.

She directed all assistant county commissioners, chiefs, and their assistants to be vigilant and enforce the ban, emphasizing the need to prevent negative peer influence and drug use, which are common in discos.

During the 56th Jamhuri Day celebrations at Jomo Kenyatta Sports ground in Kisumu town, Governor Anyang Nyong'o criticized the National Treasury for frustrating the 35 counties, including Kisumu, which were blacklisted over unpaid bills.

He argued that penalizing or denying funds based on past historical injustices is not economically feasible and urged engagement in the reconstruction of Kenya.

Meanwhile, Kisumu Deputy Governor Mathews Owili announced that doctors on strike will be promoted, appealing to them to call off the strike and promising better remuneration.
