Heavy rains have caused the Kiambere Dam to overflow, prompting a flood alert for people living along River Tana.

The Water Resources Authority (WRA) has warned citizens to observe utmost caution following the overflow at Kiambere dam, which reached its full supply level of 700 meters on Friday.

According to WRA's Chief Executive Officer Mohamed Shurie, the dam was 0.15 meters empty at 9:15 am and started overflowing at 12:35 pm.

The authority estimates that the flow will reach Garissa after 24 hours, Hola after 48 hours, and Garsen (Tana Delta) after another 48 hours.

Residents living along River Tana, especially from Danjere to Kipini, have been advised to move to higher ground to avoid loss of lives and property.

Other dams, including Sasumwa and Ruiru, are also overflowing, while Ndakaini Dam is 96 percent full and expected to reach full capacity by the end of the month.
