On December 11, 2019, Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu publicly declared himself Uhuru Kenyatta's point man in Mt Kenya region, amidst reports of chaos at Deputy President William Ruto's Nyeri event on December 8, 2019.
Wambugu made the declaration on his Facebook page, distancing himself from pro-Ruto faces seeking to make inroads in Central Kenya before the 2022 presidential elections.
He stated, 'I am Uhuru Kenyatta's political general in Mt Kenya. I have promised to ensure that Uhuru finishes strong and I will not be distracted by political noise from tanga tanga.'
Wambugu also alleged that Nyeri Woman Representative, Rahab Mukami, was being used to popularise the DP in the county.
He further stated, 'I am being fought because I have refused to align myself to Ruto's 2022 agenda. I speak out against it publicly and without shame.'
Wambugu's declaration comes after he refused to address a crowd gathered by Deputy President William Ruto in Nyeri on December 8, 2019.
Wambugu's stance has drawn criticism from Ruto's allies, including Inua Mama Chairperson, Alice Wahome, who blasted him for allegedly causing disruption and violence at Ruto's event.
