Heavy rains have caused chaos in Kenya's tourism sector, with the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) suspending flights to the Amboseli Airstrip in southern Kenya.

The suspension, which took effect on December 12, 2019, was announced after the airstrip's apron and visitor service centre were flooded.

Local airlines, including Air Kenya, have suspended flights to the airstrip, which is located within the Amboseli National Park.

"The park's Kimana Gate is periodically flooded and inaccessible as are some parts of the park," KWS advised, urging visitors to seek guidance about the status of the roads via the park's hotline number 0716493335.

Amboseli National Park is renowned for its large elephant herds and scenic views of Mount Kilimanjaro in neighbouring Tanzania.

The park is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including giraffes, zebras, cheetahs, and hundreds of bird species.

The Meteorological Department has forecast continued rainfall in December, with some parts of the country projected to receive as much as 70mm.
