On December 11, 2019, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko was arrested and charged with several counts of corruption, including abuse of office and conspiracy to commit a crime.

Following his release on bail, Sonko maintained that he was still in charge of operations at City Hall, despite being barred from his office.

"Crisis? What crisis?" Sonko said in a statement, downplaying the situation as 'pure politics.'

According to Sonko's lawyer, George Kithi, the governor was only barred from his office, not from exercising his duties as the governor.

However, Kithi noted that Sonko cannot execute duties that require him to be in his office, such as chairing an executive committee meeting or signing bills, as the office is considered a crime scene.

As a result, Sonko has to seek permission from the court to access his office and be accompanied by an investigating officer.
