On December 13, 2019, St Peter Claver's Catholic Church in Nairobi's city centre took a bold step to promote modesty among its congregants.

The church posted a sign at its entrance warning members to dress modestly, listing specific items that are considered unacceptable.

These include dresses with slits, rugged jeans, miniskirts, t-shirts with 'Red Devil' inscriptions, crop tops, caps, sunglasses, chains, and clothing that exposes arms, as well as sagged trousers.

While the church's administrators remained tight-lipped about the consequences of non-compliance, some members expressed mixed opinions on the matter.

Supporting the church's stance was Rosalia Alexis, who emphasized the importance of dressing appropriately for different occasions.

'What you wear to a dance hall or disco should not be the same as what you wear in church,' she said.

However, Alex Muinde, 26, disagreed, arguing that individuals should be free to dress according to their personal preferences and that the church should not dictate what congregants wear.
