Published on December 13, 2019, US-based Kenyan scholar Prof. Makau Mutua has urged Deputy President William Ruto to step down from the government and lead the opposition.

Mutua, a professor and lawyer, made the remarks during an interview on Citizen TV's JKL show, stating that it was clear that President Uhuru Kenyatta and DP Ruto had fallen out.

He noted that Kenyatta's actions, including his dalliance with ODM leader Raila Odinga, indicated that he was tired of Ruto and focused on building his legacy.

According to Mutua, it is impossible for Ruto to become President without Kenyatta's support, and that the bond between the Kenyatta and Odinga families is strong and difficult to break.

“You do not become President from Deputy without the President's support. It is clear that Mr. Kenyatta has lost all patience with his deputy and is interested in building his legacy. Mr. Ruto should leave Jubilee to lead the opposition,” said Mutua.
