On December 13, 2019, St Peter Claver's Catholic Church in Nairobi's city centre took a bold step to promote modesty among its congregants.
A large sign at the church entrance warned members to dress modestly, listing several items as unacceptable, including dresses with slits, rugged jeans, miniskirts, and clothing that exposes arms.
While some people, like Rosalia Alexis, supported the move, saying that people should wear appropriately for every occasion, others, like Alex Muinde, felt that the church should not control what congregants wear.
"What you wear to a dance hall or disco should not be the same as what you wear in church," Rosalia Alexis said.
