On Sunday, the inaugural Uriri Open Junior Tournament will kick off at St Joseph Rapogi High School in Migori County, bringing together over 26 teams from various regions.

According to tournament director Dan Ocholla, the event aims to develop grassroots football and nurture talents in rural areas.

Speaking to the Standard Sports, Ocholla revealed that winners of the Under-15 category will receive a trophy and Sh50,000, while Under-13 winners will take home Sh40,000, along with certificates, jerseys for finalists, and balls for every team.

"The tournament has attracted teams from Homa Bay, Suna East, Awendo, Rongo, and Uriri, which is a good start for us as we aim to develop grassroots football and nurture talents in the rural areas," Ocholla said.

The tournament also aims to help young talented players secure sports scholarships and expose talents for teams in the top leagues.

"We want to scout for talented young players and help them get school sports scholarships in secondary schools and colleges. In addition to that, we want teams in the Kenya Premier League and Betika Super League to absorb these players in their academies," Ocholla stated.
