President Uhuru Kenyatta has granted the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) taskforce a new mandate, extending their term to help navigate the national discourse on the report disclosed on November 25, 2019.

The 15-member team, led by Wajir Senator Yusuf Haji, has been tasked with structuring the recommendations collected from Kenyans into action plans that can be implemented.

The course of action will determine whether a referendum or parliamentary amendment to the constitution will be required to affect and anchor the proposed changes in the law.

Earlier, the option of whether to follow the parliamentary or referendum system was a point of contention, with some team members allied to Deputy President William Ruto expressing concerns that it was an open discussion.

The BBI report was officially launched at the Bomas of Kenya in November, marking the culmination of a 15-month journey of crisscrossing the country to collect views from Kenyans.
