On December 11, 2019, two Modern Coast buses collided at Kiongwani area on the Mombasa-Nairobi highway, killing 7 people and injuring 62 others.
The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) subsequently suspended the operational licence of Modern Coast Express Limited, grounding its 88 buses.
Following the directive, hundreds of travellers were left stranded, with some passengers causing a fracas at the company's booking offices demanding refunds.
Police officers intervened to maintain order.
Modern Coast has announced that it will issue refunds to customers whose bus-fare receipts were revoked from December 16, 2019.
"For those who had already booked to travel with us, we sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused and a refund of the same will be initiated from Monday, December 16, 2019," said Modern Coast in a statement.
