On December 12, 2019, a devastating crash occurred at Salama area along the Mombasa-Nairobi highway, claiming the lives of seven people and leaving 62 others injured.

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has since suspended the operating license of Modern Coast, a Kenyan bus company, citing concerns over the company's safety standards and operations.

According to NTSA, the suspension was informed by the increase in cases of accidents involving Modern Coast buses, including a crash with a rival company's bus on the same day.

As a result of the suspension, Modern Coast's online portal has been shut down, and its 88 buses have been grounded. Police have been directed to impound any of the company's vehicles found operating before the suspension is lifted.
