On December 11, 2019, a Chilean air force plane carrying 38 people disappeared en route to Antarctica, prompting a massive search operation in the Drake Passage.

According to Jose Fernandez, the governor of Chile's Magallanes region, human remains have been found during the search efforts.

"They told us that they had found other airplane debris as well as human remains from those on board," Fernandez told reporters in Punta Arenas, where many family members were gathering to be close to the rescue effort.

Search teams, including those from the United States, Uruguay, and Argentina, have been combing the area for any sign of the C-130 Hercules transport aircraft.

A Brazilian navy vessel has also recovered suspected wreckage from the plane, with Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro confirming the discovery on Twitter.

"The parts of the plane and the objects were found approximately 520 kilometers from Ushuaia in Argentina," Bolsonaro wrote.
