On December 14, 2019, Canada will hold its first flag-raising ceremony to honour Kenya's independence day, marking a significant milestone in the country's recognition of Kenyan Canadians.

The event, hosted by the Mayor of Brampton, Patrick Brown, at Brampton City Hall, will take place on Jamhuri Day, a day when Kenyans in Canada celebrate their independence.

The ceremony will involve hosting the Kenyan flag for two weeks and will be attended by various political and community leaders, including Federal Members of Parliament, Members of Provincial Parliament, and Regional and Municipal Councillors in the Greater Toronto Area.

The Kenya High Commission in Canada is also expected to send a representative to the ceremony.

According to Ephraim Mwaura, President of the Kenyan Canadian Association (KCA), a federal non-profit organization, this achievement is a significant step towards getting integrated with other communities in Canada.

"This is a great achievement and a milestone not just to the Kenyans living in Canada but to Kenya as a country. We are so proud to have the Canadian government recognize, for the first time, the contributions of Kenyans in this country," Mwaura said.
