Kenya's tourism sector has faced a significant setback, with arrivals at Jomo Kenyatta and Moi international airports plummeting by 18 percent in September 2019.
According to the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics, the number of visitors arriving through the two airports decreased from 159,804 in August to 130,867 in September 2019.
Despite recent improvements in air travel, including the introduction of new flights by Kenya Airways and Air France, the decline in arrivals is a cause for concern.
Kenya Airways had acquired new planes and introduced 15-hour nonstop flights to New York, while Air France announced three-weekly flights into the country and Qatar Airways increased flights between Doha and Mombasa.
However, these efforts seem to have had little impact on the overall decline in arrivals, with passengers landing at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport declining from 321,924 to 274,678 during the same period.
Furthermore, the number of passengers embarking at the airport dwindled from 208,725 to 183,881 during the period.
