On December 12, 2019, the Premier League announced the appointment of Richard Masters as its new permanent chief executive, a position he had been performing on an interim basis.

The appointment comes after David Pemsel, the CEO of Guardian Media Group, informed the Premier League that he would not be taking up the role in 2020 following allegations about his private life.

Richard Masters had been serving as the Premier League's managing director before taking on the role of interim chief executive in 2018.

Chelsea Chairman and Chairman of the Premier League Nominations Committee, Bruce Buck, praised Masters' performance, stating, 'Richard took on the role of Interim Chief Executive a year ago. Since then, the clubs have seen Richard rise to the occasion, dealing with our various stakeholders and partners with aplomb and skill.'

The appointment of Masters was approved at a special meeting of Premier League clubs, bringing an end to a protracted search for the successor to Richard Scudamore.
