Botswana's former President Ian Khama has announced plans to sue the government for defamation over allegations of embezzling billions of dollars.

The allegations, made by a department investigating state corruption in Botswana, claim that Mr. Khama and other former officials, along with a South African businesswoman, set up bank accounts in Hong Kong and South Africa to finance terrorism.

However, all the accused have denied the allegations, with Mr. Khama describing them as 'wild claims' part of a state-sponsored smear campaign.

Since stepping down as President last year, Mr. Khama has been critical of the current government, accusing President Mokgweetsi Masisi of betraying the country and reversing policy decisions, including lifting a ban on elephant hunting.
