On Thursday, December 12, 2019, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) suspended the operational licence of Modern Coast bus, leaving hundreds of travellers stranded.
The suspension came after a devastating bus crash on Wednesday night, December 11, 2019, at Kiongwani area on the Mombasa-Nairobi highway, which resulted in the deaths of 7 people and injuries to 62 others.
NTSA Director General George Njao announced the suspension, stating that the company's access to the NTSA portal had been deactivated to limit any activities on their 88 vehicles, as the investigation continues.
According to a spot check conducted by Citizen Digital, passengers who had booked Modern Coast buses for travel to various destinations on Thursday were left stranded following the directive.
Police officers were forced to intervene at some of the company's booking offices as agitated passengers caused a fracas demanding refund on their payments.
Modern Coast had communicated that they would issue refunds on Monday, but the delay only added to the passengers' frustration.
