On November 24, 2017, a 15-year-old girl was subjected to a brutal gang sex attack by three Spanish footballers in Aranda de Duero, a town two hours north of Madrid.
The victim claimed she was stripped and forced to perform sex acts by Raul Calvo, Carlos Cuadrado, and Victor Rodriguez, who were playing for third division Spanish side Arandina at the time.
State prosecutors demanded a 40-year prison sentence for Raul Calvo, who was 19 when he was arrested, and 39 years each for Carlos Cuadrado and Victor Rodriguez, who were 24 and 22 respectively.
However, judges ruled the trio knew their victim was a minor and sentenced them to 38 years each in jail.
Despite being sentenced to 38 years in prison, the men will not serve more than 20 years in line with Spanish law.
The judges ruled the sex attack was a 'surprise' and took place in the dark with the light off, leaving the victim with no chance to react.
None of the players now play for Arandina FC after being expelled from the club in the wake of the scandal.
