On December 12, 2019, a devastating flood hit Larseln camp within Samburu National Reserve in Samburu East Sub-county, destroying property worth millions of shillings.

The flood, caused by heavy downpour, broke the banks of River Ewaso Nyiro, sweeping away at least nine tents at the camp.

According to Robert Lenanyukie, the facility's manager, visitors who had booked for accommodation at the facilities were relocated to another safe facility within the national reserve.

Residents reported that a canter truck ferrying sand and two elephants along Ewaso Nyiro River were also swept away by the raging waters.

As a result of the floods, 20 families were displaced at Meyagari manyatta near Archers Post bridge along River Ewaso Nyiro, and seven houses were marooned by floods at Samburu Lodge within the national reserve.

Samburu County Commissioner John Korir assured that clients in the affected facilities were evacuated to safer places, and no human life has been reported lost due to the floods.

Commissioner Korir and Samburu County Police Commander Samson Ogello cautioned residents against attempting to cross flooded rivers and living in areas prone to floods.
