On December 12, 2019, President Uhuru Kenyatta addressed the nation during the celebration of the 56th Jamhuri Day, emphasizing the importance of upholding the constitution and preventing conflicts of interest among public officials.
He noted that public officers are not above the law and must serve the public interest, rather than their own personal interests. The president stated that it is a profound conflict of interest for public officials to engage in private practice while holding public office.
He questioned whether it is fair for legislators who have control over funds and exercise oversight over the judiciary to appear in court as counsel, potentially influencing the outcome of cases.
The president reiterated the government's commitment to fighting corruption, stating that the war on corruption will continue until public officials who abuse their positions for personal gain are held accountable.
He directed the Attorney-General to fast-track the submission to Cabinet for approval and transmittal to Parliament, the Law on Conflict of Interest, which has been subject to stakeholders' consultation.
