On Thursday, December 12, 2019, a devastating accident occurred along the Mombasa-Nairobi Highway in Kiongwani, Makueni County, claiming the lives of seven people and injuring 60 others.

Two buses, one heading to Nairobi from Malaba and the other from Nairobi to Mombasa, collided in the early hours of the morning, resulting in the tragic loss of life.

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has taken swift action in response to the accident, suspending the license of Modern Coast Bus Express Limited with immediate effect.

According to a statement from NTSA Director General George Njao, the authority has been monitoring the operations of Modern Coast Bus Express Limited following reports of several near-fatal crashes in recent days.

"Over the last couple of days, the authority has been monitoring the operations of Modern Coast Bus Express Limited following reports of several near-fatal crashes," NTSA said in the statement.

NTSA has launched an investigation into the safety standards and operations of the 88 buses belonging to Modern Coast, and has also deactivated the company's access to the NTSA portal to limit any activities on their vehicles.

The National Police Service has been advised to impound any of the company's vehicles found violating the suspension.
