Kenya's 56th Jamhuri Day Celebrations are underway at the Nyayo National Stadium, with a special guest in attendance - Barbados Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley. The event, which began on December 12, 2019, is being led by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Other high-ranking officials attending the ceremony include Deputy President William Ruto, Surinamese Foreign Minister Pollack Beighle, and Opposition leader Raila Odinga.
Kenya and Barbados strengthened their bilateral ties in August 2019, with a commitment to expand areas of cooperation and create economic opportunities for citizens of both nations.
During a meeting at State House on Wednesday evening, President Uhuru and Prime Minister Mottley discussed potential business opportunities in the Caribbean, with the PM inviting a financial sector delegation to Barbados to explore trade links.
According to Prime Minister Mottley, having Kenyan financial firms operate in Barbados could serve as an anchor for Kenyan businesses, enabling them to trade in the wider Caribbean Community (CARICOM) region.
The celebrations will also feature military parades by the three divisions of the Kenya Defence Forces - the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
