On December 12, 2019, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) suspended the operating license for Modern Coast bus company, citing concerns over the company's safety standards and operations.

Just hours before the suspension, a morning crash at Salama area on the Mombasa-Nairobi highway left seven people dead and 62 injured.

According to NTSA, the Authority has initiated a thorough investigation into the company's safety standards and operations.

"The Authority has initiated a thorough investigation into the company's safety standards and operations," a statement from NTSA Director General said.

As a result of the suspension, the online portal for Modern Coast has been shut down, and 88 buses have been grounded.
