NTSA Suspends Modern Coast Licence After Deadly Road Accident

On December 12, 2019, a devastating road accident occurred at Kiongwani area, near Salama town along the Mombasa-Nairobi highway in Makueni County, claiming the lives of seven people and injuring 60 others.

The accident involved two buses from the Modern Coast Bus Express Limited, which has since had its operator's licence suspended by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).

NTSA Director General George Njao stated that the Authority had been monitoring the operations of Modern Coast Bus Express Limited following reports of several near-fatal crashes.

“Over the last couple of days, the Authority has been monitoring the operations of Modern Coast Bus Express Limited following reports of several near fatal crashes,” Njao said.

As part of the investigation, NTSA has deactivated the Company's access to the NTSA portal to limit any activities on their 88 vehicles.

The National Police has also been advised to impound any of their vehicles from operating contrary to this suspension.

The injured passengers are currently receiving treatment at Sultan Hamud Hospital.
