Mike Mbuvi Sonko, the flamboyant governor of Nairobi, has been making headlines with his unconventional style and philanthropic activities. But is he a true philanthropist or just a populist?

Since taking over as the governor of Nairobi in January 2018, Sonko has been known for his bold and often outrageous stunts, which have left many in awe and others seething with rage.

Despite his questionable past, Sonko has managed to endear himself to the common mwananchi, particularly those from underprivileged backgrounds. His philanthropic activities have given many a lifeline, and he has become a saviour to the downtrodden.

However, his detractors, mostly the elite, brush off his humanitarian gestures as mere populist gimmicks meant to win people's hearts. Whether Sonko is a true philanthropist or just a populist is something that will be revealed in the fullness of time.
