Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja has written to the Speaker of the Senate, Ken Lusaka, requesting a Special Sitting to discuss the situation in Nairobi County.

On December 11, 2019, Sakaja expressed concerns about how the county would be run in the interim period, given the absence of a deputy governor, following a court ruling that barred Governor Mike Sonko from accessing county offices without an investigating officer or authorized person.

According to the court ruling, when accompanied to his office, Sonko would only be allowed to pick up his personal belongings.

Senator Sakaja emphasized the need for the Senate's urgent attention, stating, 'The exceptional situation that has arisen affects Nairobi City County and indeed creates an unprecedented state of affairs that requires the urgent attention of the Senate during this period between two sessions.'

He requested Speaker Lusaka to exercise his jurisdiction under Standing Order No.1 and call for an urgent Special Sitting of the Senate to discuss the exceptional situation prevailing in Nairobi and consider taking legal or legislative action in the interest of Nairobi residents.

The Senate had adjourned for a two-month recess until February 11, 2020, when they would return for the start of the 2020 calendar.
