On December 12, 2019, Christmas came early for students of MCEDO Beijing School in Nairobi's Mathare slum, thanks to donations from various Chinese companies operating in Kenya.
The Kenya China Economic and Trade Association (KCETA) donated Sh1.4 million to cater for the needs of the 526 students at the education centre operated by Mathare Community Education and Development Organization (MCEDO), a Community Based Organization in the heart of Mathare slum.
According to KCETA's Chairman Li Changgui, the gesture aimed to ensure the children enjoyed the festivities period and supported activities of the centre, which was founded in 2000 to cater for the less privileged in society.
"I hope this will be the biggest gift for the children," Changgui said, urging them to become useful members of society in future and contribute to Kenya's progress and development.
Mathare Community Education and Development Organization's headmaster, Benedict Chege, lauded the Chinese companies' gesture and urged them to continue supporting their activities.
"The Mathare child has been suffering, and no one has been there to celebrate with them. Some parents cannot provide for their children," Chege said, expressing gratitude for the donation.
