On Friday, world marathon champion Eliud Kipchoge will be awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Laws degree by the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom, just one week after receiving an Honorary Doctorate of Science degree from Laikipia University.

The University of Exeter's recognition of Kipchoge's achievements in sports comes after he received a letter from the university's Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Steve Smith, in July last year.

According to the letter, the university's senate recognised Kipchoge for his outstanding achievements in the field of sport, stating, 'It gives me great pleasure to inform you that the Council and Senate of the University of Exeter would like to recognize your outstanding achievements in the field of sport by conferring upon you an Honorary Doctorate of Laws.'

As part of the recognition, Kipchoge was invited to attend one of the university's graduation ceremonies in either July or December 2019, with the option to choose between two dates.

Published on December 12, 2019, an Honorary Degree is an academic degree awarded by a university, where the usual requirements have been relinquished. It is usually known as 'Honoris Causa', a Latin phrase meaning 'For The Sake of Honour', and is given to individuals who have achieved something important.
