On December 11, 2019, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko was released from police custody after five days, following his arrest on corruption charges.

Chief Magistrate Douglas Ogoti granted Sonko a cash bail of Sh15 million or an alternative bond of Sh30 million with a surety of a similar amount, citing that bond can only be denied if it is proved that the accused person is likely to interfere with witnesses.

As part of the bail conditions, Sonko was barred from accessing his office until the case is heard and determined, and was ordered to be escorted by investigating officers if there is a need to access the offices.

Additionally, Sonko was prohibited from commenting on the case on social media or in public, and was required to deposit his passports and other travel documents in court.

Sonko, who is accused of misappropriating county funds amounting to Sh357 million, pleaded not guilty to over 10 counts related to corruption, along with his 15 co-accused.

The case will be mentioned on January 15, 2020.
