On December 12, 2019, Rwanda's government announced a deal with Qatar Airways to redesign Bugesera International Airport in Kigali.

Under the agreement, Qatar Airways will take a 60 percent stake in the new airport project, valued at $1.3 billion (KSh.132 billion), according to Reuters.

The airport is expected to accommodate seven million passengers annually when the first phase is completed in five years, with the second and final phase, set to be finished in 2032, increasing the facility's capacity to 14 million passengers per year.

Rwanda Infrastructure Minister Claver Gatete stated that they are currently searching for a contractor to build the mega airport.

When complete, Bugesera International Airport will be able to handle more passengers than Kenya's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), which has an annual passenger capacity of 7.5 million.
