On December 10, 2019, the Nairobi County Assembly witnessed a significant shake-up in its leadership, with two chairpersons of committees being ousted in a no-confidence vote.
James Mwangi Wambui, the Kiamaiko Ward MCA, was replaced by nominated MCA Joyce Muthoni Kamau as the chairperson of the Transport committee. Anthony Kiragu, the Planning and Housing committee chairperson from Waithaka Ward, was also ejected by members of the assembly and replaced by Karura MCA Joseph Wambugu.
Speaker Beatrice Elachi announced the changes on the floor of the House and thanked the two for leading the committees for the last two-and-a-half years.
Notably, Kiragu took issue with the assembly over his ouster, claiming it was not procedural. He argued that no elections were held to appoint the new chair, but he respected the decision of the committee.
The overhaul in the committees' leadership came shortly after Elachi presided over the swearing-in of a new Public Service Board following her return to the county assembly.
