Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has secured his release after paying a Sh15 million cash bail, pending a graft case mention on January 15, 2020.

On Wednesday, the High Court in Nairobi granted Sonko a Sh15 million cash bail or an alternative bond of Sh30 million with a surety of a similar amount.

As part of the bail conditions, Sonko is required to deposit his passport and any other relevant travel documents in court.

He is also barred from accessing his office and commenting on the case on social media, as are the directorates of public prosecutions and criminal investigations and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission.

According to the court, Sonko can be escorted to his office by the investigating officer or any other authorized officer if need be.

He is facing a total of 19 charges, including corruption, abuse of office, and money laundering, with allegations that he conspired with rogue business people and senior county government officials to embezzle more than Sh380 million from the county coffers.
