On December 11, 2019, Bloomberg announced its third annual Bloomberg 50 list, featuring individuals who made significant contributions in 2019.

Among those recognized was James Mwangi, CEO of Equity Group, a Nairobi Securities Exchange-listed firm.

Mwangi's aggressive deal-making in the regional banking market earned him a spot on the list.

Equity Group signed a share swap deal with London-listed Atlas Mara, acquiring four banking units in the process.

The deal saw Equity Group issue new shares valued at $105.4 million (Sh10.6 billion) to Atlas Mara.

Equity Group is also seeking to acquire a 66.5 percent stake in Banque commerciale du Congo for Sh10.7 billion in cash.

On being named to the list, Mwangi said, 'I am honoured to be part of this incredible group of people, who are changing the world in significant ways and driving their important messages home, with commitment and passion.'
