On December 11, 2019, Fifa President Gianni Infantino visited Brussels, where he was questioned by reporters about a reported plan for a closed European super league.

According to the New York Times, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez had spoken to Infantino about creating a breakaway elite international league.

The proposed league would feature two divisions of 20 teams drawn from current national leagues, with the aim of winning a lucrative continental audience.

However, the Association of European Leagues has denounced the plan, and European football governing body Uefa has also criticised any proposal that would undermine its Champions League.

Infantino refused to deny that any talks had taken place on the subject, stating, "Fifa is not backing any project." He added, "Fifa discusses everything, with everybody."
