On December 10, 2019, Mesut Ozil expressed his delight on social media after learning that a Ghanaian amateur football club had renamed itself after him.

The club, originally known as Young Boys FC, was renamed Abiriw Ozil FC in appreciation of Ozil's kind gesture.

According to reports, Ozil's agent Erkut Sogut visited the club and presented them with 80 signed jerseys from the player.

Abiriw Ozil Football Club. Nice to have a football club named after me in the Eastern Regional town of Abiriw in Ghana, Ozil tweeted.

Glad to see you all smiling in the @arsenal & #M1Ö shirts. #YaGunnersYa, he added.
