On December 10, 2019, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) summoned East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP Simon Mbugua and Governor Mike Sonko's chief of staff Peter Mugo for questioning.

The two were called in over alleged plans by youth to cause chaos during the court ruling on Sonko's bail application, which was set for December 11, 2019.

According to reports, the two recorded statements at the Nairobi Area DCI office before being released.

Earlier, Sonko was arrested on December 6, 2019, after being linked to a Sh357 million irregular tender alongside other county officials and company owners.

On December 10, 2019, Sonko was admitted to the Kenyatta National Hospital after reportedly falling ill while at Kamiti Maximum Security Prison.

Visiting the governor in hospital was restricted, with only his wife and two of his lawyers allowed to see him.

The Kenyatta hospital private wing was also under tight security.
