Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko was granted Sh15 million bail by Chief Magistrate Douglas Ogoti on December 9, 2019, after pleading not guilty to corruption charges.

As part of the bail conditions, Sonko was barred from accessing his office and commenting on the case on social media. He was, however, allowed to pick his belongings from the office and was required to deposit his passport and travel documents with the court.

According to the court, Sonko and his co-accused would be escorted to their office by the investigating officer or any other authorized officer if need be. The anti-corruption judge further directed that they deposit their passports and travel documents with the court.

Chief Magistrate Ogoti ruled that Sonko could be escorted to his office by the investigating officer or any other authorized officer if need be, adding that the director of immigration would ensure that none of the accused leaves the jurisdiction of the court without the permission of the court.

On Monday, December 9, 2019, Sonko and his co-accused denied the corruption charges. His bail application, which the prosecution opposed, was to be heard at 2.30pm but was pushed to the next day, meaning Sonko would spend two days in custody.

On Monday night, Sonko reportedly fell ill and was driven from Kamiti Prison to Kenyatta National Hospital where he was admitted for medical treatment.
