On November 21, 2019, a 41-year-old tea picker was brutally assaulted by a group of young men in Kithaku area, Meru county.

The victim, George Mutura, had his testicles surgically removed and is currently recuperating at the Meru Level Five hospital.

Two of the suspects, Misheck Muthomi and Bernard Mutwiri, were denied bail until an application by the prosecution opposing their release is considered on Friday.

However, the Githongo Principal Magistrate, Susan Ndegwa, released a third suspect, Alfred Mutwiri, citing lack of evidence linking him to the assault.

Instead, the suspects were charged with assaulting the tea picker and inflicting grievous bodily harm.

According to the prosecution, the suspects were arrested following an outcry by members of the public during a baraza over escalating insecurity in the area.

Upon arrest, police seized 11 mobile phones of different makes suspected to have been stolen from members of public.

The case has been fixed for mentioning on December 13, 2019.
