On November 21, the body of Eric Oloo, a journalist with the Star newspaper, was found in the bedroom of Chief Inspector of Police Sabina Kerubo in Siaya. The body was blood-soaked and showed signs of head and abdominal injuries.
A postmortem examination revealed that Oloo died due to head and abdominal injuries sustained after being hit with a blunt object. Detectives had earlier told the Nation that Oloo's killers had banged his head on the wall of a gate, kicked him in the stomach, and died moments after midnight.
Two brothers, Franklin Joel Luta and Victor Ogola Luta, have been accused of ganging up to beat up and kill Oloo. They appeared before Siaya Judge Roseline Aburili on Tuesday but did not take a plea.
The prosecutor, David Okach, requested the judge to order a mental examination of the duo at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kisumu before they can stand trial. Justice Aburili directed police to produce the suspects in court for plea on December 18.
Ms. Kerubo is being treated as a State witness and is in police custody following a directive by Siaya Principal Magistrate James On'gondo that she be detained for 14 days.
