Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has been released from custody, but under strict conditions.
On Wednesday, December 11, 2019, Sonko was arraigned at Milimani Law Courts over corruption allegations and released on a Ksh15 million cash bail.
Alternatively, he was offered a Ksh 30,000 bond by the courts.
Chief Magistrate Douglas Ogoti, in his ruling, referenced Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu's trial and issued the stringent conditions for Sonko's release.
Sonko is barred from commenting on the ongoing case, including on his social media handles, and from engaging with his supporters on the matter.
He is also not allowed to access his office, except in the company of security personnel to pick his personal belongings.
Additionally, Sonko has been ordered to deposit his passport and travel documents with the courts, effectively preventing him from traveling outside the country.
