On a three-day benchmarking tour, six Ugandan Members of Parliament (MPs) from the parliamentary health committee arrived in Kitui County, Kenya, to study the county's innovative health insurance scheme.
Published on December 11, 2019, the Ugandan delegation began their visit at Kitui Level IV Hospital to observe how patients under the county-based insurance cover are served.
According to Micheal Bukenya, the chairman of the Ugandan parliamentary health committee, Uganda is in the process of establishing a similar health insurance cover, making it essential to learn from Kitui's model.
Kitui's health insurance cover, known as K-CHIC, was established a year ago and offers a unique approach to ensuring all residents access quality and affordable healthcare.
Every household in Kitui pays an annual premium of Ksh. 1000, and over 120,000 households have subscribed to the cover.
The Ugandan MPs are expected to tour other health facilities in the county on Wednesday, December 11, 2019, to gain a deeper understanding of the scheme's operations.
